About cookies
A cookie is a small file, usually consisting of letters and numbers, that is recorded locally by the website in the temporary memory of your browser, and then in your computer, for varying periods of time depending on need and generally ranging from a few hours to several years. Through cookies, information about your preferences and other technical data can be recorded, which allows for easier navigation and greater ease of use and effectiveness of the site itself. For example, cookies may be used to determine if a connection has already been made between your computer and our site or to maintain “login” information.

Types of cookies
Based on characteristics and usage, we can distinguish different categories of cookies.
Technical and profiling cookies
- Technical cookies – These are necessary for the proper functioning of the site and delivery of the service. They are used, for example, to manage login, proper page navigation, storage of login credentials to make site entry faster, and to keep preferences and credentials active while browsing.
- Profiling cookies – These are used to collect and analyze site traffic and usage. These cookies, while not identifying the user, allow, for example, detection of whether the same user returns to log on at different times. They also allow the system to be monitored and improve its performance and usability.
Session and persistent cookies
Cookies can expire at the end of a browser session (the period between the user opening a browser window and closing it) or they can be stored for a longer period of time.
- Session cookies – Allow websites to link a user’s actions during a browser session. Session cookies expire when the browser session ends and therefore are not kept for a long time.
- Persistent cookies – These are stored on a user’s device between browser sessions and allow the user’s preferences or actions to be stored with respect to a site or in some cases with respect to different websites.
First-party and third-party cookies
A cookie is “first-party” or “third-party” based on the website or domain from which it originates.
- First-party cookies – These are the cookies set by a website visited by the user i.e. a website displayed in the URL window.
- Third-party cookies – These are the cookies set by a domain other than the one visited by the user. A third-party cookie is said to exist if a user visits a Web site and a third-party company sets a cookie through that site.
